Texas

We decided to take a spur of the moment trip to Texas in late April.  We flew in to San Antonio, spent a day and night there, then headed to Austin for a few days.  We absolutely loved Texas.  We needed a little pick me up type trip and decided to check out one of the places that we've talked about possibly living.  I was born in Texas and haven't been back since. Eric had never been there.  Being the adventurous souls that we are, we were super excited to check things out.

First we spent a day on the Riverwalk in San Antonio.  We had heard a lot of great things about this area and it lived up to the talk.  We had beautiful weather while Michigan had cold and rain.  It was a great break.

Our first meal was at a restaurant called The Republic of Texas.  I had an excellent Mexican meal (shown below).  Eric had a burger.  It was relaxing to sit on the river and enjoy our meal in the sun.

We also visited the Alamo.  I find it ironic that most pictures of the Alamo show it out in the middle of nowhere but it is actually right downtown.

In the late afternoon we swam outside at our hotel and enjoyed the beautiful sun.  Then we decided to check out a Brazilian steakhouse.  Eric had heard many great things about this type of restaurant.  We saw one while we were walking around downtown and decided to check it out.  It was called Texas de Brazil.  It was such a unique experience.  You pay a flat rate (that is a bit high).  First you visit what they call a salad bar, but is probably closer to a small buffet of side dishes.  Once you are finished, you wait for the meat to be showcased at your table.  There are many men that roam the dining area with various slabs of meat that they cut a piece off of if you choose it.  You have a "button" that you turn over as green when you are looking for "meal delivery" and red if you have had enough.  You can do this for as long as you want.  I didn't last very long.  Eric did.  He really enjoyed the restaurant.  They had women doing flying acrobat type tricks at one end of the restaurant and the atmosphere itself is a lot of fun.  It looks like they are opening one in Detroit in May for local folks.
We woke up the next morning and headed to Austin.  We ate at a college type bbq place that I found on my handy dandy Droid2 called Ruby's.  It was near the University of Texas.  They had outdoor seating and delicious, cheap food.  I had a yummy mac and cheese side with my bbq chicken.  Later that day, we checked out the live music scene on 6th Street in downtown Austin.

We ate at another yummy Mexican restaurant for dinner on our first nigh in the city - the Iron Cactus.

We played shuffle puck (which I had never played) at a place called Buffalo Billiards.  This place was super cool!  It had pool tables, foosball, skeeball, shuffle puck and a few other games (as well as a bar).  I wasn't too bad for it being my first time!  We came back to the area the next night to check out more bands.  First we ate at a very nice and well reviewed Mexican restaurant called Manuel's.  It was delicious - 2 thumbs up!  Afterwards we visited many bars including a blues bar, a country bar, and watched the UFC fight on the street outside a bar called Bikinis. This is not really a place I'd normally hang out but with the t.v.s. facing the street and the fight on, it was a popular place.  The bike police officers enjoyed the fight there as well.  They shut down about 3 blocks of 6th Street at night for the live music scene.  Austin calls itself the Live Music Capital and we could see why.

We also checked out amazing outlets in San Marcos.  There were "Premium Outlets" right across the street from "Tanger Outlets". We did a lot of shopping.

I couldn't believe that they had a VS outlet as well as an Express outlet.  We both enjoyed ourselves!  We also ate at a Chick-fil-A which is something we both really like that doesn't exist in Michigan.
As if we actually needed more reason to love Texas:
Much more reasonable gas prices and an amazing Mexican market that we visited back in San Antonio on the day we headed back to Michigan.

We both agreed that Texas is a beautiful place.

Presley and I share a love of swimming

On Friday, MARCH 18th, Presley and I took our first spring walk to the campground near our home.  It was such an awesome day.  I love the campground's beauty before the campers arrive.  We walked to the edge of the lake and she just had to get her feet wet many times.

The lake still has ice

and the parking area still had snow.

She just couldn't help herself though.  We both enjoyed the sun and temperature.

Droid 2

I love my new phone. This is my first blog post directly from my phone. We'll see if this helps me post more. Today I just have a pic of our snow from the blizzard. I am not sure why people are saying it wasn't that bad. I have to disagree. We got a lot of snow! Presley is NOT a fan.

Toledo Zoo Lights

Two days before Christmas, we visited the lights at the Toledo Zoo.  It was a perfect day with many of our favorite people!  My parents, brother and sister-in-law, and Eric's Mom and Aunt Betty (and Eric and I) arrived when the lights opened at 5 p.m.  We saw all of the lights and also the trains (one my favorites).  We even saw a couple of animals.  I didn't think any of the African animals would be out but one Tiger was out and he was just sitting in the dark watching people.  It was actually a little creepy if you ask me!  We also went to Famous Dave's afterwards for yummy BBQ.  We had a great time.  It was a great way to start the Christmas holiday weekend.

Stocks & Benefits

Before I started working for my publicly traded company, I knew a small, but significant amount about stocks.  We have Ameritrade and Edward Jones accounts.  Eric and I both have 401(k) accounts that we are quite "involved" with.  However, I hadn't really ever followed stock prices on a regular basis.  Now that I have stock options and am enrolled in our awesome perk of the employee stock purchase plan, I definitely follow our stock.  It is getting a little better each day.  I am crossing my fingers that it will hit $20 sometime soon.  I may be waiting for awhile, but hopefully not.  I definitely see how having these sorts of benefits as well as the return on assets bonus structure encourages employees to focus on the bottom line more than at other privately held companies I've worked for.  I realize that the bottom line isn't all that matters (especially as my role in HR) but as a team, we are much more conscious of costs/spending when it directly impacts our pay.

GO STLD! :)

Volunteering

Life is busy and I have tried to focus on the fact that regardless of how hard I may think my life is, it is still leaps and bounds easier than many other people's lives.  Therefore, even if you never feel like you have enough time or money to get by in life, you probably do have at least a little time to give back.

I joined the Ann Arbor Jaycees 4 years ago.  I joined because I wanted to add variety to my life and get out and experience new things.  Boy, did it give me that!  The organization also introduced me to a large like-minded group of people that I have become great friends with.  I have found that I enjoyed the community service projects quite a bit.  Now that I work in Jackson and live in Livingston County, Jaycee events are a bit difficult to make it to.  I did a bit of research and found a cause that I felt strongly about in Jackson.  I started training with the AWARE shelter earlier this fall.  It is a shelter/center for battered women and their children.  The training is extensive but I am excited to have found a way to give back.  I have had some stumbling blocks in my life and was always so lucky that there were people there to help me along the way, both family/friends and strangers/new friends.  Many people do not have anyone to lean on.  Actually, many may not be the accurate term.  It is probably more accurate to say a large percentage of people feel that they do not have anyone that can help them.

How to be a Good Person

After some recent events, I really started to wonder what others felt made a good person.  I did some research and feel that the article above is a pretty good representation of what I found.  No one is perfect and I know that there is no way in life to make every person you come in contact with happy.  What you can do is try your best to be the person that you can respect.   I'd say that is my goal. I'll keep on working on constantly trying to achieve it.

Happy Thanksgiving to my cherished family and friends.  Love you all.
